The Colosseum, a symbol of Rome is a huge structure that witnessed the "culture" revolution of the Rome empire. This was where the battle between the slaves and beasts took place. Its 'function' changed when the emperor declared to stop such acts, on religious grounds.
The structure was huge... grand! Look at the stones (er... rocks) that
were used to build the structure. In addition, the amount of marbles
used (which were already removed (and recycled)).
The Arch that stands beside the Colosseum was built, not for war victory (which was usually the case), but to commemorate the end of the slave-beast 'entertainment'.
